April 2024 Horror Preview

No horror preview this month….April Fools!

April 5th

The First Omen:

A prequel to one of the most well-regarded and infamous horror films ever made almost 50 years in the making. Starring Nell Tiger Free (Nicolas Winding Refn’s TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG) and Bill Nighy (LOVE ACTUALLY), The First Omen explores the origins of the antichrist, Damien, himself.

After the success of films like IMMACULATE, LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, and now this…I think it’s safe to say we’re in a bit of a renaissance period for supernatural horror.

Smartly directed by newcomer, Arkasha Stevenson (LEGION, VESSELS) – you can hear our thoughts on the film only on the Red River Horror podcast here.

April 12th

Sting:

Fearing her parent’s reaction, a 12-year-old girl raises a pet spider that will eventually grow into something far more sinister.

Very few things scare or bother me but I absolutely hate spiders. I’ve never sat through EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS or ARACHNOPHOBIA, etc. so I think it’s more than safe to say that this will only be joining a long list of other creepy crawly creature features that I will probably never be seeking out anytime soon.

You can read our very own Staci Layne Wilson’s thoughts on the film here only on Red River Horror, though.

April 19th

Abigail: Kathyrn Newton, hot off the heels of LISA FRANKENSTEIN, Giancarlo Esposito (BREAKING BAD, THE MANDALORIAN), Melissa Barerra (SCREAM), and the late Angus Cloud (EUPHORIA) star in this horror comedy reimagining of 1936’s DRACULA’S DAUGHTER from the minds behind SCREAM (2022) and READY OR NOT.

A fresh and interesting twist on an old classic that looks like a lot of fun.

As a huge fan of READY OR NOT, I’ll be first in line to see this one when it hits theaters later this month.

April 25th

THEM: THE SCARE: Little Marvin takes us back to a time of tumult in 1991 Los Angeles County, California for the next tale in the anthology Series THEM. THEM: THE SCARE will center around LAPD homicide detective Dawn Reeve (played by Deborah Ayorinde) as she looks to solve a gruesome murder in the middle of all the chaos, while her family gets gripped by a sinister force the closer she gets to solving the crime.

We’re also excited to see the incomparable Pam Grier star as Dawn’s mom! There are high expectations for some real-life and supernatural scares in THEM: THE SCARE, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

April 26th

Humane: Last but certainly not least, and perhaps my most anticipated this month, David Cronenberg’s family legacy continues after his and his son Brandon’s films have already become timeless horror classics – this time around, daughter Caitlin Cronenberg, makes her feature debut with Humane.

Featuring a star-studded cast of character actors such as Peter Gallagher (AMERICAN BEAUTY) and Enrico Colantoni (GALAXY QUEST, KILLCHAIN), Humane looks like yet another future cult classic from the most exciting family in horror filmmaking.

The darkly comedic tale of a government overpopulation crisis taken to its most extreme conclusion – mandatory death and an upper crust family caught in the middle.

Perhaps an allegory for the assisted suicide controversy currently going on in Canada? Find out what all this bleakness and hilarity *really* means when it hits limited release late April.
